Household Wealth at Record High

A rising stock market and increases in home prices are giving a big boost to household wealth, helping Americans to regain nearly all the wealth they had lost during the recession, the Federal Reserve reports.

Household wealth nationwide increased 2.6 percent from July through September to reach a record-breaking $77.3 trillion. Since bottoming out in 2008, household wealth has been steadily rising.

Household wealth reflects the value of homes, stocks, bank accounts, and other assets, minus mortgages and other debts, according to The Associated Press.

Rising stock prices alone helped Americans’ net worth grow by $917 billion from July through September. What’s more, rising home values added $428 billion.

With the stock market and home prices still rising, many economists believe that this could roll into stronger economic growth for next year, too.

Lakewood Ranch Main Street's Latest Addition

With business booming in The Rhinestone World custom shirt-design business, owners Matt and Laureen Vassallo think the time is right to bring their bling to Lakewood Ranch Main Street and are opening a storefront there, called Shirts and Stones.

Customers will be able to choose from about 3,500 designs loaded into a computer, then pick from dozens of colored rhinestones and have them adorn men's or women's shirts, handbags, car decals or just about anything else.

Their original business grew so big they needed a 4,000-square-foot warehouse on Lena Road to headquarter The Rhinestone World, their online distributor selling rhinestones, supplies and starter kits and offering instructional videos to more than 6,000 clients worldwide.

Shirts and Stones should be open by the end of the year.

Will Fed Postpone Tapering Until 2014?

The Federal Reserve is reportedly no longer in a rush to cut back on the $85 billion it spends per month on its bond-purchasing campaign, which has been helping to keep borrowing costs low. The Fed is now unlikely to start tapering its program until next year, The New York Times reports.

Job growth has improved the last few months, which the Fed has said it will use as a gauge to decide when to start winding down its bond purchases.

In June, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke predicted that the Fed would begin to taper its purchases by the end of this year. The announcement brought a shock-wave to markets, and drove 30-year fixed-rate mortgages up a full percentage point.

The Fed meets next week for its final policy-making committee meeting of the year, and they may still decide to make a cut next week. However, based on recent public comments from members, the move is looking unlikely, The New York Times reports.

Vincent Reinhart, a former head of the Fed’s monetary policy staff and now the chief United States economist at Morgan Stanley, believes the committee will use its December meeting to set a plan for tapering, but likely won’t start to retreat on its bond purchases until March.

The Fed has announced a commitment to hold short-term interest rates near zero as long as the unemployment rate is above 6.5 percent. In November, the rate was 7 percent.

When Bernanke first hinted at tapering plans in June, investors started to drive up rates across the board, The New York Times reports. But while the Fed is close to tapering, it’s not close to raising interest rates, and “markets are beginning to appreciate that they are separate tools,” Bernanke said last month.

Economic Growth Revised Upwards at 3.6% in Q3

The U.S. economy grew at a 3.6 percent annual rate in the third quarter, faster than first reported and its strongest performance in 18 months.

Behind the improvement: Businesses boosted inventories even more than the government had estimated last month.

The Commerce Department’s revised estimate handily beat economists’ consensus forecast of 3.1 percent, as reported by Econoday. It’s also the highest growth rate since 2012’s first quarter, when the economy expanded at an annual rate of 3.7 percent. It expanded at a 2.5 percent annual rate in the second quarter.

But last week's revision to estimates of final demand – the value of goods and services people actually use now – fell slightly, to a 1.9 percent annual rate from 2.0 percent in the first estimate. Inventory restocking added 1.68 percentage points to growth, the Commerce Department said, twice as much as first estimated.

Economists were divided in their reaction to the news. Analysts at PNC Financial and Barclays agreed that the big inventory buildup is unlikely to be repeated in the fourth quarter, resulting in lower growth. But together with higher business investment and faster hiring, others argued rising business confidence and an improving housing market augur better growth by early next year.

“While there were special factors that boosted growth, there is no getting around the fact that the economy posted a 3 percent gain in the middle two quarters of the year,” Citigroup economist Peter D’Antonio wrote. “The economy achieved that solid pace despite substantial fiscal drag (from) tax increases and the sequester. This resilience suggests that the underlying growth in the economy has deep roots.”

Other major components of gross domestic product were a mixed bag.

Consumer spending grew 1.4 percent, a little less than first estimated. Federal spending fell less than the government first reported, and private investment in equipment, software and building grew faster than its first estimate. Exports were less than first estimated, and imports were higher, reducing gross domestic product growth, the government said.

The results appear to buttress surveys and other data that show rising confidence in faster growth next year. The Business Roundtable reported that its poll of chief executive officers shows improving prospects for investment, and last week's news that investment and inventory building are rising points in that direction.

So does news from the labor market. ADP reported that private employers added 215,000 workers in November, backed up by Friday's jobs report.

Florida Consumer Confidence Bounces Back in November

Consumer sentiment among Floridians recovered from last month’s drop, rising to 76 in November from the revised reading of 70, according to a new University of Florida survey.

“As expected, consumer sentiment among Floridians regained much of the loss from September to October as the shutdown and debt ceiling debate came and went,” says Chris McCarty, director of UF’s Survey Research Center in the Bureau of Economic and Business Research. “However, at 76 we are several points away from our post-recession high of 81. We also note that the October reading was revised down one point to 70 indicating just how much of an effect it had on consumer optimism.”

Four of the five components used in the survey went up. Survey takers’ overall perception that now is a good time to buy big-ticket items, such as a car, increased 16 points to 94.

“That component is now at the highest since April 2007 when the economy was showing signs of the bursting housing bubble which led to the Great Recession,” McCarty said.
